Halloween Creepy Crawly Cocktails

I can't say I'm the biggest fan of Halloween, it was never something we did in my house growing up and I have only been trick or treating once. I do remember my trick or treating experience very clearly though as one of the houses we knocked on had run out of sweets and apologetically offered us warm apple strudel instead. Obviously warm apple strudel is a brilliant offering on a cold miserable night and it was the kind couple at number 34 who inspired this Halloween apple cider cocktail!

To take this from a delicious apple cocktail to a delicious halloween cocktail you'll need to make some creepy crawly ice cubes...

All you will need is a pack of little plastic spiders and ants (the kind you can get in pound shops will do just fine), an ice cube tray and some boiled water that has been left to cool. Give your insect toys a little wash in warm soapy water and split them between each ice cube tray, fill up with the water and leave to freeze for a few hours until they are solid. (The boiled water helps the ice cubes freeze a little clearer...)

Once your ice cubes are frozen it's time to whip up your cocktails...

To make two cocktails you will need:

-100ml gin
-300ml apple cider
-25ml  lime juice
-50ml honey syrup (-25ml cup honey, 25ml cup hot water)

Shake the gin, honey syrup and lime juice up in a cocktail shaker then pour over the insect ice cubes into a glass and top with the apple cider. So simple and so delicious!

N.B obviously once the ice has melted the little insect toys are a big choking hazard so always serve these with a straw and only to people you trust not to swallow them!

This is delicious as a cold cocktail but after Halloween when serving ice cubes with little spiders in would perhaps be frowned upon you could heat all the ingredients up in a pan over a low heat and serve in mugs as an Autumnal hot toddy.

As always if you give these a go let me know on Instagram or Twitter!
