National Breakfast Week

I also like all other food but to me breakfast foods really are the best of all of them. That probably has a lot to do with the fact that breakfast can involve nearly any food you can think of, so when I heard that National Breakfast Week was a thing I knew I had to talk about it!

Breakfast week ran from 24th-30th Jan, talking it old school with a Sunday week start. Twitter however seemed to disagree and started talking about it on the 25th (please excuse the bitter tone but for a whole day I thought I was a groundbreaking blogger then come Monday morning everyone was talking about it!) Anyway, if you follow my instagram you will have seen that everyday of the past week I posted a picture of my breakfast from that day. (If you don't follow me on instagram you really should consider it..!) So here's a round up of my week in breakfasts...

I started off with something I had never even heard of but when I saw this recipe on Molly's blog I knew I had to try it. Luckily for me I live near a Persian food store so I am now in possession of the biggest bag of za'atar I have ever seen! I will happily be the first to admit that yogurt and egg sounds like a kind of gross combination but somehow it works. It really works.

I was pushed for time today so went for a classic. Marmite on toast (with a serious amount of butter...!) I used to hate this love it or hate it spread but after living in Sydney for a while and falling for Vegemite it was only right that I gave it a chance. One year later me and Marmite are still very happy together!

Got a bit fancy today and went with tropical porridge. The porridge is made with water and the thick creamy bit you get at the top of a can of coconut milk then topped with mango and lots of passionfruit and seeds (because I needed something to make up for the curly fried I had for lunch the day before!)

Today was a bit special. I was given the opportunity to review the new porridge menu at Brasserie Darwin and it was pretty spectacular. (Post on it coming up very soon.)

Today's breakfast didn't turn out anywhere near as pretty as I wanted it to but it was delicious! The fella, one of my housemates and I managed to get through a whole loaf of brioche in the process which wasn't particularly healthy but it was definitely worth it! French toast with blueberry compote and very crispy bacon. Not bad for a Thursday morning!

Back to porridge today and this time with a lot of stewed apple and cinnamon. The addition of a cup of tea and breakfast is a new on for me, I've never really been a tea girl but a friend of mine has recently got me on to Earl Grey and I haven't looked back!

The last day of National Breakfast Week involved a stack of pancakes. Of course. These are made by blending a banana, an egg, a spoonful or so of flour, some baking powder and a splash of milk. Served with sliced almonds and raisins and a side of relief that after this week my breakfasts acan go back to being slightly ugly and no one will ever know!

So there we have it, now it's back to porridge out of the pan (wish I was joking) and not an artfully placed piece of fruit in sight!

(What' your favourite breakfast? Let me know and leave me some inspiration!)

  1. It might not be beautiful but toast and Marmite always tops my breakfast wish list. Love the sound of the mango/coconut porridge though, might give that a try.

  2. oh my. be still my breakfast loving heart (breakfast will forever be my favorite meal to cook!) So intrigued by the yogurt/egg combo..!

    1. Yeah it sounds a bit gross and wrong but actually it was really scummy! You should definitely give it a go!

  3. Such stunning breakfasts! This has inspired me to try harder with breakfast! I love the look of your french toast and bacon.. yum! x

    1. Oh thank you, I actually put the bacon in a warm oven after frying to keep it hot while I cooking the pancakes but turned out I had put it in a hot oven was more crispy than bacon, but still yummy! x
